Tripunithura election case: M Swaraj approached the Supreme Court

Kochi: M.Swaraj approached the Supreme Court in the Tripunthura election case. An appeal has been filed in the Supreme Court against the rejection of the petition challenging the victory of UDF MLA K Babu. The High Court had earlier rejected M Swaraj’s petition seeking annulment of K Babu’s election victory in the case. Following this, Swaraj has approached the Supreme Court.

Swaraj approached the High Court alleging that K Babu used religious symbols to get votes in the elections.
In the petition, Swaraj had alleged that Ayyappan’s picture was used along with the candidate’s photo in the voter slips distributed to the houses during the election.

Swaraj had also told the court that she campaigned in the constituency saying that if K Babu loses, it is equivalent to Ayyappan losing. It was argued that campaigning using religion was a violation of the representation of the People Act.

Pictures of campaign materials were also submitted to the court as evidence. UDF candidate K Babu won by 992 votes against LDF candidate M Swaraj in Tripunithura.
