Even when the state has been lashing with rain for more than two weeks, there has been a lot of curiosity as to why the announcement of the arrival of South West Monsoon is taking so long. After that, the weather department issued a notification that the monsoon will arrive within hours.

Monsoon is declared when Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep get 2 consecutive days of 2.5 mm or more rainfall, the strength of the westerly winds from the Arabian Sea, and the reduction in heat dissipation from the ground to the surface.

This time, the weather department had predicted that the monsoon would arrive on May 31. Last year, the monsoon arrived on June 8. In the last 5 years, 2022 monsoon has arrived in May. The Meteorological Department confirmed that the monsoon had arrived on May 29.

Heavy rain is likely in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts. Yellow alert is in place in Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea on Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts.
