‘Why pay for girls’ ..? Note exposing the discrimination faced by junior doctors in Kerala

Doctor’s note exposing the discrimination faced by junior doctors in Kerala regarding salary. The note of Dr. Manoj Vellanad of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College is now going viral. When asked about the salary that was worked, promised, and deserved, ‘Why to pay for girls’ ..? He points to the fact that a district-level head of the health department asked a junior doctor he knew.

When asked about a decent salary, the authorities themselves say inhumane dialogue. It’s really a cucumber town ..! He notes. Many work without even being able to go home in the midst of severe crises. ‘I sincerely believe that this government values humanity more than mere politics. In that case, these children should be paid at least 1 day before the festival and bonus to government officials who have not even done 50% of their work for 5 months. This is a request not only of me but of all Malayalees with a little humanity. That’s right, ‘he concludes.

Dr. Manoj Vellanad’s Facebook post,

a question asked by a junior doctor in a health district and the head of the state. That, too, is the question a doctor has asked himself for the past two or three months, to a junior doctor who has been forced to work for the government in the name of Kovid, who has to do whatever anyone says, without a precise post, and a girl who represents a thousand such doctors.

Let me tell you about a girl who is very close to me out of a thousand. He completed his House Surgery from the Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram in April, and joined the Kovid Duty of the Health Department believing in the promise of the Government. She studied on loan. The loan must be repaid. There are other debts. His father is a driver. No income for the last 5 months. Brother is a student. The current expectation is on this child’s income for everything from home expenses and loan payments.

There are many such boys and girls in that group. This is a great question for them.

Now the nature of the work: Posting is in one’s own district but there is no need to go home or see them all. Kovid will be posted on duty at any hospital. Two weeks later, a week quarantine. The next day, work will be elsewhere. Working inside a PPE-kit, worrying about getting caught by COVID, not being able to find the right people, in the meanwhile not paying the salary …? What if the authorities themselves utter such inhumane dialogue when asked for a job, a promise, a deserved salary?

Really a cucumber town ..!

Those who sit in the armchair of power and look down and ask why women are paid should have the courage to look up and ask this question. From the Minister of Health to the DHS and the Additional DHS and co-DMOs, first ask, why do you pay women .. and then scare the poor kids.
