80 MPs from Justin Trudeau’s Own Party Call for His Resignation

Eighty MPs from Justin Trudeau’s own Liberal Party have called for his resignation, with more than half of the 153 members in the House of Commons turning against him. The demand centers on appointing a new leader to spearhead the next election campaign, putting Trudeau’s leadership in jeopardy.

Liberal MPs from Atlantic Canada and Ontario have united against Trudeau, while Indo-Canadian MP George Chahal from Alberta had already raised the demand for his resignation. The internal rift comes as the Conservative Party prepares to table a no-confidence motion by the end of January.

A survey by the Angus Reid Institute published on Monday revealed that Liberal Party support has dropped to a mere 16%, the worst in the party’s 157-year history. The previous low was 18.9% during the 2011 election under Michael Ignatieff’s leadership. Among voters under 20, only 22% support Trudeau, signaling a troubling decline in his popularity.
