THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a rare tribute to the indomitable human spirit, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on March 27 honored 55-year-old powerlifter Venu Madhavan at the Lok Bhavan. The ceremony celebrated the Kollam native’s extraordinary feat of clinching national gold medals while battling Stage 3 blood cancer.
Venu Madhavan, a lifelong powerlifting enthusiast who took up the sport at age 16, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014. However, the diagnosis served as a catalyst rather than a deterrent. Venu has become a symbol of medical defiance, frequently transitioning from intensive chemotherapy sessions at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) to the competition platform within a matter of days.
The Governor presented Venu with a traditional ponnada and a memento, recognizing his stellar performance at the recent All India Powerlifting Championship. Competing in the 74kg category, Venu secured a double gold, lifting a staggering 480 kg in the Classic M 2 and 570 kg in the Equipped category.
“Venu Madhavan is not just an athlete; he is a symbol of mental strength and perseverance for the youth of Kerala,” Governor Arlekar stated during the ceremony. He noted that Venu’s journey—maintaining a three-year unbeaten national streak despite the physical toll of leukemia—redefines the conventional limits of human endurance.
Health experts and sporting peers alike have hailed Venu’s resilience as a beacon of hope for cancer patients. As he continues his treatment, Venu remains undefeated on the national stage, proving that while cancer may attack the body, it cannot crush a determined soul.
