Community Kitchens in Crisis: Janakeeya Hotels Struggle to Survive Without Subsidized Rice

Thiruvananthapuram: The government has stopped the construction of eight Kudumbashree popular hotels, after subsidized rice which was given at subsidized price. The Kudumbashree popular hotels in the state are on the verge of closure.

After abolishing Rs 10 subsidy given by the government for meals, the state government has also abolished the rice that was given to Kudumbashree Janakiya hotels at a subsidized price.

Rice prices are soaring. The current price of rice is above Rs 40 per kg. This should be bought and served for 30 rupees. They came to know that the subsidized rice has been stopped when they came to buy it. Lakhs are also to be received in the form of meal subsidy which was abolished last year. With this, they are in debt on top of debt. The prices of vegetables, groceries and fish are skyrocketing. In this situation, it is not possible to carry out the enterprise.

When the crisis of rice was reported, the instruction was given to increase the price of food. Popular hotel staff say the common man can’t afford it. None of them want to increase the price and make a profit. The initiative is for that day. If this level goes down, they are afraid that if they want to serve food in a popular hotel, they will have to starve their own house.
