Elon Musk’s SpaceX to Launch Eighth Test Flight of Interplanetary Rocket Today

Texas: Elon Musk’s SpaceX is set to launch the eighth test flight of its Starship interplanetary rocket today. The company is making final preparations at its Starbase facility in South Texas after the seventh test ended with the explosion of the upper-stage ship and multiple delays affecting the eighth test. The launch window opens on March 6 at 5:30 PM Central Time, and the event will be streamed live worldwide.

The live webcast will begin 30 minutes before the Starship Super Heavy rocket’s liftoff. Viewers can watch the launch in real time on SpaceX’s website, its X (formerly Twitter) account, and the X TV app. Starship is the largest, heaviest, and most powerful rocket ever built for space missions. The mega-rocket stands at 121 meters tall, consisting of two stages: the Super Heavy booster, which is 71 meters high, at the bottom, and the Starship spacecraft, which is 52 meters high, on top. The Super Heavy booster is powered by 33 Raptor engines, giving it the ability to lift massive payloads into space.

In this test, SpaceX aims to successfully land the Super Heavy booster using its mechanical arms, known as Mechazilla, and deploy dummy satellites into space using the upper-stage ship. The seventh test flight ended in failure when the upper-stage ship exploded eight minutes after launch. To prevent similar issues, SpaceX has made several hardware and design modifications for this latest attempt.

Starship is designed as a fully reusable space vehicle, with the goal of supporting missions to Mars and the Moon in the future.
