French President Emmanuel Macron hit with egg

French President Emmanuel Macron was hit with an egg while he was visiting Lyon on Monday to promote French gastronomy. A video of the incident, widely shared on social media, shows Macron walking through the crowd when an egg bounced off him without breaking while a protester shouted “Vive la revolution” (long live the revolution).

Two bodyguards can be seen immediately getting closer to the president to protect his shoulders. The video also shows a man being taken away from the scene by other bodyguards. Macron, 43, was walking through the crowd when it bounced off him without breaking during a trade fair in Lyon to show off France’s cuisine. Video of the incident showed the egg flying through the air before hitting Macron whose bodyguards then moved in to protect him. The footage also showed a man being led away by what appeared to be other members of the security team. Reporters at the scene heard Macron saying: “If he has something to tell me, then he can come.” The president had been attending Sirha Lyon, a meeting of food service and hospitality leaders in the south-eastern city. There he made a series of policy announcements aimed at trying to revive the restaurant and hotel industries, including a tax exemption for tips paid on bank cards. Mr Macron also announced the creation of a new “centre of excellence” to promote French culinary traditions and train future chefs. The incident is not the first time Mr Macron has been accosted by a member of the public.
