Israeli Army Chief Resigns

Israeli Chief of Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, along with the Southern Command Chief, has resigned, taking responsibility for the failure to prevent the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. General Halevi, known for securing numerous military victories for Israel, announced his resignation amidst widespread scrutiny.

Following the October 7 attack, both General Halevi and the Southern Command Chief stated their intention to step down, citing accountability for their roles in the military’s shortcomings during the incident.

In a letter to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Halevi confirmed he would relinquish his duties as Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) by March 6. While Southern Command Chief Yaron Finkelman has also submitted his resignation, he has not yet specified his departure date.

The resignation comes 15 months after Israel declared war on Gaza following the Hamas attacks and two days after a ceasefire was implemented. General Halevi’s departure will coincide with the conclusion of the ceasefire’s first phase.
