Neighboring countries should also take responsibility for the concerns of Rohingya refugees, says UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The United Nations cannot always bear a massive burden alone,” Guterres stated. He joined 100,000 refugees for Iftar, the breaking of the fast, at the Ukhiya camp in Cox’s Bazar near the Myanmar-Bangladesh border on Friday. The head of Bangladesh’s interim government, Mohammad Yunus, was also present at the event.
Rohingya refugees need food, medicine, and clothing. Their well-being should be a shared responsibility of neighboring countries, António Guterres emphasized.
Currently, the UN is providing the necessary funds for their support. “I can promise that we will do everything possible to resolve this crisis. Moreover, I will speak with all countries that can support us in ensuring adequate funding,” the UN chief stated.
