Dhaka: Protesters set fire to the Dhaka residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh. The attack occurred early this morning while his daughter and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was addressing her party workers via social media. Calling it a “shrine of fascism,” the protesters vandalized and torched the Dhanmondi 32 residence of Mujibur Rahman. The attack followed online calls for an uprising.
Hasina was speaking at an online event organized by Chhatra League, the student wing of her party, Awami League, when the incident took place. At the same time, social media posts urged bulldozers to demolish Mujibur Rahman’s house. By 8 PM, protesters armed with hammers and other tools began demolishing parts of the building. They also destroyed a portrait of Mujib. By 9:30 PM, the house was set on fire, and by 2 AM, much of the residence had been reduced to rubble with the help of cranes and excavators, according to media reports.
Reacting strongly, Hasina condemned the attack on her father’s house. “They may destroy a building, but they cannot erase history. History will take its revenge,” she declared. She further accused the interim government of seizing power unconstitutionally and urged the people of Bangladesh to unite against the current regime.
