Declining Birth Rate Behind Drop in Student Enrollment: Minister V.Sivankutty

Education Minister V. Sivankutty informed the Kerala Assembly that the decline in birth rates is the primary reason for the reduction in student numbers across schools.

In the 2024-25 academic year, there was a drop of 1,17,049 students compared to 2023-24 in government and aided schools. The number of births in 2009 was 5.5 lakh, whereas in 2019, it dropped to 4.8 lakh, leading to fewer enrollments in Class 1.

In March 2024, 4,02,624 students completed Class 10 in public schools, while only 2,50,986 students joined Class 1 in June, highlighting the impact of the declining birth rate on school admissions.
