Elephant fell into the canal carrying water from the Mullaperiyar dam to Tamil Nadu. The incident took place on Wednesday morning at the Periyar Tiger Sanctuary. The elephant, which floated through the canal, stayed on the grill about 100 meters away from the shutter of the dam. The forest guards were the first to see the elephant staying in the grill.
Due to the strong water flow in the canal, the elephant could not get ashore. At present, 120 cubic feet of water per second is transported to Tamil Nadu through this canal. Then, when the quantity of water taken to Tamil Nadu was completely reduced, the elephant escaped by swimming into the river.
