Hate Speech Case; Court Verdict on PC George’s Bail Plea Today

Kottayam: The court is set to deliver its verdict today on the bail plea of P.C. George, who is currently in judicial remand in connection with a hate speech case. His lawyer argued in court that George’s health condition is deteriorating and requested bail while also seeking medical procedures, including an angiogram.

However, the prosecution opposed the bail, stating that P.C. George has repeatedly violated bail conditions in the past. The defense countered, arguing that if found guilty, he can be punished after trial, and that being a public figure often results in legal cases.

The defense further questioned whether there was any concrete evidence proving that George violated bail conditions and pointed out that the investigation into the hate speech case was already complete, making bail justifiable.

The assistant public prosecutor opposed the plea, emphasizing that P.C. George has committed similar offenses before. The prosecution highlighted that George, who had served as an MLA for 30 years, made the statement with the intent to disrupt communal harmony. It was also pointed out that when George had previously sought anticipatory bail, the high court had already been convinced of the seriousness of the case and denied it, stating that granting bail could send a wrong message to society.
