Heavy rain in UAE, red alert issued

Dubai: Heavy rain and hailstorm with thundershowers across the Gulf. The rain that started on Monday intensified on Tuesday morning. Rains were heaviest in UAE, Oman and Bahrain. Various meteorological centers have said that rain is likely to continue on Wednesday.

Air traffic was disrupted due to waterlogging on the runways. Nine flights departing from Dubai and eight flights arriving to Dubai were cancelled. All flights arriving in Dubai will be diverted to nearby airports until the weather improves.

Officials warn that no one should go out unless it is essential. Winds of up to 70 km per hour are expected to hit various Gulf countries on Wednesday. Winds were strong all along the Dubai and Abu Dhabi coasts. 18 people have died in the floods in Oman so far. 10 of them are school students. Many people have gone missing. No damage has been estimated so far. The situation is expected to improve by Wednesday evening.
