U.S. President Donald Trump has initiated the process of deporting illegal Indian immigrants. These individuals are being sent back to India on U.S. military aircraft. The first batch of immigrants has already left the U.S. aboard a C-17 military plane and is expected to arrive in India within 24 hours, according to U.S. reports.
Previously, citizens from countries like Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras had been deported to their respective nations using military planes. This is the first instance of deportations specifically to India.
To curb illegal immigration, Trump has been deploying more military personnel along the U.S.-Mexico border, using military planes to deport detained immigrants, and setting up military camps to house them.
Concerns about illegal immigration from India were raised by both U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. Last week, Trump mentioned, “India will take the right steps to handle the deportation of illegal immigrants. This has been discussed with Prime Minister Modi.”
India has responded, stating that the country has always kept its doors open for the lawful return of Indian citizens without proper documentation. Foreign Minister Jaishankar clarified that the government is currently reviewing the records of those eligible for deportation and determining the exact number of such individuals.
“We have always made it clear that if our citizens are unlawfully present in any country, including the U.S., we will open the doors for their lawful return once their Indian citizenship is confirmed,” Jaishankar said.
