In a significant moment in Iranian aviation history, an all-women crewed flight took off from Mashhad’s Hashemi Nejad International Airport. The flight, named “Iran Banu” (Iran Lady), was operated by Aseman Airlines.
Captain Shahrazad Shams, Iran’s first female pilot, piloted the aircraft, which carried 110 female passengers. This is the first time in Iran’s aviation history that a flight consisting entirely of female passengers and crew has departed from Mashhad, according to official news agency IRNA.
The flight took off on December 22, which coincided with the birthday of Hazrat Fatima Zahra, daughter of Prophet Muhammad and his wife Khadijah. This day is also celebrated as Mother’s Day and Women’s Day in Iran. Reports indicate that the passengers aboard the flight were women who had excelled in various fields and were visiting the shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Imam.
