Kerala anganwadis closed for a week due to heat wave

Thiruvananthapuram: A holiday has been announced for Anganwadis in the state due to scorching heat. The women and child development department has proposed to stop the work for a week. Other activities of Anganwadis will be carried out as usual. Minister Veena George informed that the supplementary nutrition to be given to the children during this period will be delivered to the homes.The action follows the warning of the Disaster Management Authority and the Health Department in the wake of the heat wave.

Meanwhile, two people died due to sunstroke in the state. Ulumpantavita Viswanathan (53), a native of Pantakkal, Mahi, who was undergoing treatment for sunburn, and Lakshmiamma (90), wife of the late Krishnan, died at their house in Pallatheri Paramedu Nallampuraikal. Viswanathan collapsed while working on a well and died in a private hospital in Kannur.

Lakshmiamma was missing from home yesterday afternoon. Later, relatives and locals were searching and found him lying in the Aliyar canal of Pallatheri around 5:30 in the evening. They were taken to the district hospital with serious head injuries but died. The postmortem conducted at the district hospital this morning confirmed that the cause of death was sunstroke.
