KSRTC Sells 2,089 Old Buses as Scrap in Eight Years

In the past eight years, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has sold 2,089 old and unusable buses as scrap, generating a total of ₹39.78 crore. These buses, mostly acquired between 1998 and 2017, were no longer fit for service, with many damaged in accidents or outdated beyond use. The majority of these buses were purchased before 2007, with most from 2004 being sold in large numbers.

Unlike traditional sales, KSRTC does not dismantle these vehicles themselves instead, they are sold through online auctions facilitated by the Metal Steel Trading Corporation, a central government body. The highest earnings were reported in the 2022-23 period, with ₹14.53 crore collected.

The breakdown of revenue over the years is as follows: ₹1.77 crore in 2016-17, ₹8.07 crore in 2017-18, ₹5.09 crore in 2018-19, ₹1.36 crore in 2019-20, ₹75.25 lakh in 2020-21, ₹1.85 crore in 2021-22, and ₹6 crore in 2023-24.
