March 8: Celebrating International Women’s Day Today

March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a day to recognize the invaluable role of women in society. Every Women’s Day serves as a reminder of how essential every woman is to the world. The main goals of this day are to empower young women and girls to become leaders of sustainable change and to create an inclusive culture for all. The United Nations theme for this year is:
“For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment”. The origins of International Women’s Day date back to 1908, when 15,000 female workers in New York took to the streets demanding better pay, improved working conditions, and voting rights. Their movement gained momentum and spread to different parts of the world. In 1909, women in New York officially observed Women’s Day for the first time.

In 1910, the idea took a significant step forward during the World Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, where 100 delegates from 17 countries gathered to discuss gender equality and women’s rights. Finally, after six decades of progress, the United Nations officially declared March 8 as International Women’s Day in 1975. Today, this day stands as a symbol of women’s empowerment, equality, and the ongoing fight for a just and inclusive world.
