MSF-SFI Students Protest Nirmala College: Demand for Separate Prayer Space

MSF-SFI students detained the principal of Nirmala College for hours in his office demanding a special place for praying. The complaint is that they were not allowed to pray in the classroom of the college. It is one of the prominent colleges with autonomous status in Kerala.

The decades old college is functioning under the diocese of Kothamangalam. The principal was detained for demanding that Muslim students studying in the college should be allowed a special place to pray. The students are raising the demand that they should pray in the college itself when there is no obstacle to go to the mosque near the college to pray on Friday.

Last day in the college, 4 female students prayed in the classroom. The teacher had clarified that this is not the correct position. Later, the students came forward with the strike. The college hostel is located near the college. Here too, the teachers make it clear that there is no obstacle for the students to go and pray. Criticism has been raised that behind this there are some people who are injecting the religious fundamentalism that is growing in Kerala to the students
