Mynagappally Accident Case; Ajmal’s Bail Plea Rejected

Kollam: The incident of a young girl being hit by a car and run over while traveling on a scooter in Mynagappally on onam day shocked all of us. Ajmal and Sreekutty are the first and second accused in this case. The Principal Sessions Court, Judge Gopakumar, has rejected the bail plea of the first accused, Ajmal.

The court dismissed Ajmal’s bail plea, citing the severity of the crime. The accused had informed the court that he did not stop the car out of fear of mob attack. However, the court questioned what would happen if all accused in vehicle-related accidents across the state adopted this stance. Without granting further explanations, the court denied the bail plea.

The second accused in the case, Sreekutty, had received bail the previous day. The police had charged her with incitement. Sreekutty’s statement to the police claimed that she had been trapped. She admitted to giving 13 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 20,000 to Ajmal and stated that he had encouraged her to consume alcohol. Sreekutty’s testimony mentioned that she drank under Ajmal’s pressure and that she had fallen into the situation.

On the other hand, Ajmal’s statement claimed that it was Sreekutty who had asked for alcohol. “It was not intentional to run the vehicle over the woman. I heard the locals shouting to stop the vehicle, but I didn’t know what had happened. It was only later that I realized the vehicle had run over something,” Ajmal told the police in his statement. He further mentioned that he had not instructed to move the vehicle forward.
