Nimisha Priya’s Death Sentence: Indian Government Transfers $40,000 to Victim’s Family

The central government has said that the release of Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya, who is on death row in Yemen, is a matter between the family of the deceased and Nimisha Priya’s family.

The Union Minister of State for External Affairs was responding to questions raised by John Brittas MP in the Rajya Sabha regarding the release of Nimisha Priya. The Minister said that at the request of Nimisha Priya’s family, $40,000 was transferred to the family of the deceased through the account of the Ministry of External Affairs

The Foreign Minister also said that discussions are ongoing between Nimisha Priya’s family and the family of the deceased for further action. Yemen had earlier clarified that the President had not approved Nimisha Priya’s death sentence.

The Yemen Embassy in Delhi said in a press release that the Houthi Supreme Council had approved the execution. The embassy was responding to reports that the Yemeni President had approved the execution.
