Greater Chennai Corporation Urges Shop Owners to Prioritize Tamil Language on Store Signboards

Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation has asked traders to prominently display the Tamil language on shop signs in Chennai city. The decision was taken during a meeting held with traders, distributors, restaurant owners, etc. at the Ripon Building. The notice states that the shop names should be displayed in Tamil on the signs. This is also explained in a press release issued by the authorities in this regard.

Officials said that a special committee headed by the Collectors has been formed in all districts to ensure that the names of commercial establishments are displayed in Tamil. It was announced that this committee will conduct awareness campaigns by distributing pamphlets to traders to convince them of the importance of displaying the boards in Tamil.

The authorities have also warned that if the boards are not in Tamil, a fine of Rs 2,000 will be imposed as per Section 18 of the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishment Act, 1948, and a fine of Rs 500 as per the Catering Establishment Act, 1958. Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner K Kumaragurubaran announced that action will be taken in this regard.
