Rebuild Kerala: Decision to Speed Up Thrissur-Kuttippuram Road Construction

As part of the project, construction work has commenced on the stretches from Poonkunnam to Muthuvara and from Kechery to Chundal. The construction activities are being carried out by EKK Construction Group. The road reconstruction is being undertaken as part of the Rebuild Kerala initiative.

The Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) division of the Public Works Department is responsible for the construction. The development work spans from Paramekkavu Junction in Thrissur to Kallumpuram, covering 33.243 kilometers across the constituencies of Thrissur, Wadakkanchery, Manalur, and Kunnamkulam. In areas prone to waterlogging and damage, concrete roads will be constructed, while other sections will have bituminous macadam tarring. At Muthuvara, as part of the road construction, the damaged layers have been removed, and road renovation has begun.

The project includes the reconstruction of three small bridges and 28 culverts. Additionally, 20 kilometers of drainage canals, 25 kilometers of footpaths, and bus shelters at 19 junctions and residential areas are also planned.

In the more damaged stretch from Kechery to Chundal, five narrow culverts will be demolished and replaced with new ones. As part of this process, stone-lined drainage canals will be built on both sides and connected to the culverts. Trees in the Parannur wetlands that obstructed road development have already been cut down. To resolve obstructions related to power lines, construction contractors have reached an agreement with KSEB authorities.

Due to the ongoing road construction in Poonkunnam and Kechery, traffic diversions have been implemented. Private limited-stop vehicles coming from Thrissur are being redirected from Kechery through Akkikavu Bypass via Pannithadam to reach Kunnamkulam. Bus operators have reported traffic congestion in several areas due to these diversions.
