Siddharth’s Death; It was lack of vigilance, not failure, Says Chief Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Pookode Veterinary College student J.S. Siddharth’s death Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that no efforts have been made by the government to delay the investigation into the incident where Siddhartha was found dead. The government and the police have taken efficient and transparent investigative measures. However, he said, the three officers lacked vigilance.

12 students were suspended after Siddharth was found to be a victim of ragging. The government also took action against officials who failed to hand over the investigation to the CBI. The Chief Minister said in the assembly session that the government did not fail and some officials of the home department were not alert.

Siddharth, a native of Nedumangad, hanged himself in the bathroom of the hostel on February 18. The investigation was handed over to the CBI after the family came forward alleging mystery in the death. The High Court had granted bail to the 19 accused in the CBI’s charge-sheet a few weeks ago. A single bench of Justice CS Dias granted bail on the grounds that the accused students had not produced sufficient evidence to prove that they had induced Siddharth to commit suicide.
