Thiruvambadi Devaswom Secretary Rejects High Court’s Directive on Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur: The current move is to avoid holding the Pooram, and therefore, the Thrissur Pooram cannot be conducted as per the new directive from the High Court regarding elephant processions, said Thiruvambadi Devaswom Secretary K. Girish Kumar. The 36-hour-long Pooram requires 150 elephants for one section alone. He also emphasized that decisions should not be made based solely on the views of NGOs aiming to cancel the festivals, and added that Thiruvambadi will join the case.

He further stated that with the current restrictions, it will not be possible to conduct the procession or the rituals at the temple. Vinod Kandenkavil, convener of the Pooram devotees’ group, claimed that there are moves by foreign powers, including those seeking to disrupt the Thrissur Pooram. He stressed that if the current restrictions remain in place, the procession will not happen and urged the government to intervene urgently.

“This is an issue that can be resolved in minutes by both the central and state governments,” he said, adding that steps should be taken to bring over 200 elephants to Kerala as quickly as possible.
