It has been 12 years since Thilakan, the king of Malayalam acting, passed away. Thilakan’s signature was always his attitude and attitude. The unique actor, who conquered the hearts of Malayali with his deep voice and emotional acting, disappeared inside Kalayavanika on September 24, 2012. Surendranatha Thilakan was born on July 15, 1935 in Ayirur, Pathanamthitta district.
He started his artistic career through school plays. He was the chief organizer of around 18 professional theater groups. Acted in various plays in about 10,000 venues. Directed 43 plays. Thilakan entered the film industry in 1973.
Tilakan, who began his artistic career with plays, dropped out of school in 1956 to become a full-time theater actor. During this time he was running a drama committee called Mundakayam Natak Samiti along with his friends. As part of the political activities of the Mundakayam Kala Samiti, Mundakayam Thilakan’s revolutionary songs were used regularly in most of the political meetings. Thilakan entered the film industry in 1979 with a small role in the film Ulkadal. In 1981, he made his foray into leading roles by portraying the role of a full-fledged Kulluvarki in the film Kolaman.
Yavanika, Kireedam, Moonnampakkam, Sphatikam, Kattukutira, Gamanam, Santhanagopalam, Ritubhedam, Ustad Hotel and Indian Rupee are important films in Tilakan’s acting career. The last film she acted in was ‘Seen Onnu – Nammude Veedu’. He was admitted to the hospital after falling ill on the location of this film. Before his death, the last film he acted in was Simhaasan.
Tilakan received the Special Jury Award for Acting as part of the 2006 National Film Awards. Thilakan won this award for his performance in the film Ekantham. Thilakan was previously nominated for the National Award for Best Actor in 1986 for his performance in the film Irakal and in 1990 for his performance in the film Perunthachan.
In 1988, Tilakan received the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Ritubhedam. The Padma Shri Award in 2009 was also sought for Tilakan.
