6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Cuba, Several Houses Damaged

Two strong earthquakes were felt in Cuba. The US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale. According to the Geological Survey’s report, the epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Bartolomé Masí in Cuba. About an hour earlier, another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 had been recorded. The eastern parts of Cuba, including major cities like Santiago de Cuba, experienced tremors. No casualties have been reported.

The earthquake caused significant damage to houses, buildings, and roads. However, there have been no reports of fatalities. Just days earlier, a Category 3 hurricane, Rafael, had battered the Caribbean island nation. People in major Cuban cities such as Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, and Guantánamo were terrified by the tremors. Many fled their homes in search of safety.
