Kochi: Following Munambam, residents in Chavakkad, Thrissur, are now facing a Waqf-related threat. Over 200 families in Chavakkad are dealing with a crisis similar to the one in Munambam.
Although a complaint was filed with the Chief Minister’s office, residents say they have not received a favorable response. Consequently, the coastal residents of Chavakkad have approached the High Court, seeking intervention in the matter.
Many residents are waiting for land documents from the village office, but the revenue authorities are withholding them due to the Waqf Board’s claim over the land.
Valiyakath Haneefa, a local resident, recently went to the Manathala village office to obtain documents for his six cents of land, hoping to secure a loan for his daughters’ weddings. However, revenue officials informed him that they could not provide the documents since the land was claimed by the Waqf Board. The village officer clarified that there is an instruction not to issue ROR (Record of Rights) certificates to those currently holding the land.
Residents are concerned about the future as they cannot legally assert ownership of the land they have lived on for decades.
