Asha workers’ hunger strike enters the second day, LDF meeting demands a resolution through discussions

The hunger strike of Asha workers in front of the Secretariat has entered its second day. The hunger strike is being led by Kerala Asha Health Workers Association General Secretary M.A. Bindu, along with Asha workers R. Sheeja and K.P. Thankamani.

The day-and-night protest in front of the Secretariat has now reached its 40th day. The protest committee is dissatisfied as no progress has been made even after the Health Minister traveled to Delhi, announcing a discussion with the Union Minister. The minister stated that despite requesting an appointment with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, they were unable to secure a meeting.

During the LDF meeting, a demand was raised to resolve the Asha workers’ protest through discussions. The Chief Minister stated in the meeting that if the central government increases its share, the state government is willing to proportionally increase its contribution as well.

The hunger strike of Asha workers was inaugurated by K.G. Thara, former head of the State Disaster Management Centre. As a symbol of solidarity with the protesters, a sapling was handed over to them. The protestors remain firm in their stance that they will not end the strike until all their demands are met, including raising their salary to ₹21,000 and ensuring retirement benefits.
