In Malappuram, two Assam natives were arrested for extorting ₹10 lakh from a young man by trapping him in a honeytrap. The accused, Yasmin Alam (19) and Khadija Khatoon, were staying at a lodge in Thangalpadi, Kuttippuram, and were taken into custody by the Kuttippuram police. Both have been remanded.
The victim, a native of Vattamkulam, Edappal, who runs a mobile shop, was lured into the trap through a friendship initiated by Yasmin Alam. She approached the victim at his shop under the pretext of repairing a mobile phone. Fluent in Hindi, she developed a friendship with him, which later grew into a plot involving both Yasmin and Khadija. Yasmin invited the victim to their lodge room, introduced Khadija as her friend, and hosted a party where they forced him to consume alcohol.
While intoxicated, they filmed explicit videos of the victim and seized the cash he had. The gang repeatedly summoned the victim to the lodge under the threat of releasing the videos, extorting money via Google Pay, ATM withdrawals, and direct payments. Over the past month, the gang managed to extract ₹10 lakh from the victim. When his savings were depleted, he borrowed money from others to continue paying the gang.
The victim’s ordeal escalated when he borrowed ₹16,000 from his sister, who works in Bengaluru. His family became suspicious after learning about the borrowing, prompting the victim to reveal the honeytrap scheme. The family approached Kuttippuram police, who raided the lodge, apprehending the accused.
The victim, who had recently returned to his hometown and started working at a mobile shop, had earlier worked in Mumbai. The extorted amount included insurance money received after his father’s death and ₹3 lakh gifted by his grandmother. The police recovered mobile phones, explicit videos, and bank account details from the accused. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the gang has trapped others in a similar manner.
