Kochi: Union Minister Suresh Gopi visited the family of Anna Sebastian, a chartered accountant from Kochi who died due to work-related stress, to offer condolences. After the visit, he spoke to the media, expressing his concerns about the injustice surrounding the incident. “No one should have to go through such an experience again. Social reform is needed,” he stated, adding that he would raise Anna’s death in Parliament as a father, beyond his role as a minister.
Suresh Gopi mentioned that actions would be taken against companies that exploit their employees. The letter sent by Anna’s mother to the company head, following Anna’s death from a heart attack, has sparked significant discussion on social media. Anna’s father stated that the letter was intended to prevent others from facing similar hardships. The family is currently not pursuing further legal action related to Anna’s death, but they demand government intervention to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Meanwhile, Shobha Karandlaje, the Union Minister of State for Labour, announced that an investigation into the circumstances leading to Anna’s death would be conducted. In the interim, an email from an employee of the company has come to light, putting the firm on the defensive. The email, sent by employee Naseera Kazi to the company chairman, states that work-related stress is a constant issue at the company. It warns that if complaints are made to the internal committee, retaliatory actions often follow. The employee urged that action must be taken before another tragedy occurs.
