Controversial Speech; Crime Branch Investigation Against Minister Saji Cherian

Thiruvananthapuram: The investigation against Minister Saji Cherian, in the case alleging an unconstitutional speech, has been handed over to the Crime Branch. DGP Sheikh Darvesh Sahib issued the directive in this regard.

The High Court had earlier ordered a detailed investigation into the case. Justice Bechu Kurian had directed that the Crime Branch should conduct the inquiry and complete it promptly. However, criticism had arisen over the delay in transferring the case. Amid this, the DGP issued an order transferring the case to the Crime Branch.

The court had earlier observed that certain statements in the speech could be interpreted as disrespect towards the Constitution, under the 2003 amendment of the National Honor Act, which prohibits disrespect towards the Constitution, the national flag, and national emblems, among other symbols.
