Thiruvananthapuram: Grand preparations are underway for the felicitation ceremony honoring PR Sreejesh, who secured a bronze medal in the Olympics for the second time. The event will take place today at 4 PM at the Jimmy George Indoor Stadium in Vellayambalam and will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. During the ceremony, the Chief Minister will present Sreejesh with the ₹2 crore cash prize announced by the state government.
Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman will preside over the event. In addition, four Malayali athletes in the Indian contingent for the Paris Olympics—Muhammad Anas, HS Prannoy, Muhammad Ajmal, and Abdulla Abubakar—as well as Chief Athletics Coach P. Radhakrishnan Nair, will each receive a cash award of ₹5 lakh. Five Asian Games medal winners will be appointed as Assistant Sports Organizers in the Department of General Education, and Education Minister V. Sivankutty will distribute the appointment orders during the ceremony.
The appointees are PU Chitra, Muhammad Anas, VK Vismaya, V Neena, and Kunhumuhammad. Sreejesh will be received at Manaveeyam Veedhi around 3:30 PM and will be escorted to the Jimmy George Indoor Stadium in an open jeep. The procession will be accompanied by 10 school bands and students from the GV Raja Sports School, various sports council hostels, and other educational institutions. Ministers, as well as international and national athletes and representatives from sports associations, will also attend the ceremony.
