Due to the strengthening of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, the state will continue to experience heavy rainfall, according to the weather department. A cautionary notice has also been issued for the Tamil Nadu and Andhra coastal areas, including Chennai, for the next two days. In Kerala, an orange alert has been issued in two districts, and a yellow alert in ten districts. The orange alert is in place for Malappuram and Kannur districts, while the yellow alert is issued in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kasaragod districts.
Meanwhile, the Northeast Monsoon has officially commenced. There is now a possibility of thunderstorms and strong winds. The Indian Meteorological Department has confirmed that this year’s Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn, and the Northeast Monsoon has begun. The arrival of the Northeast Monsoon has been confirmed by the onset of easterly/northeasterly winds over southern India and the Bay of Bengal.
While the Southwest Monsoon withdrew on its usual date (October 15), the Northeast Monsoon arrived five days earlier this year. Normally, it arrives by October 20.
