Kangana Ranaut appears before Mumbai court in Javed Akhtar defamation case

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut appeared before a Mumbai court on Monday in connection with a criminal defamation complaint filed against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar. The court had last week said it will issue a warrant against Ranaut if she fails to appear on the next date of hearing. The case has been adjourned till 15th of November. Ranaut today came to the court after failing to adhere to court summons for number of times pertaining to the case.

Meanwhile, Actor Kangana Ranaut has filed a counter-complaint against lyricist Javed Akhtar in a Mumbai court, alleging “extortion and criminal intimidation”. She has accused Mr Akhtar of threatening her and also said she had “lost faith” in the Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in Andheri. Ms Ranaut’s lawyer informed the court of a request to transfer the case. Ms Ranaut’s counter-complaint is in response to a defamation suit by Mr Akhtar, who has alleged she dragged his name into a TV discussion last year on the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. During the filing of the counter-complaint, Ms Ranaut’s lawyer, Rizwan Siddique, accused Mr Akhtar of making threats, although, by his own admission, these alleged threats are an old matter. The two came face-to-face in the courtroom, where Ms Ranaut arrived accompanied by her enhanced CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) security entourage. Akhtar had last year filed a complaint alleging that Ranaut made defamatory statements on national and international television.

Earlier this month, the Bombay High Court dismissed a plea filed by Ranaut seeking quashing of proceedings initiated against her by the local court on the criminal defamation complaint filed by Akhtar. Meanwhile, Ranaut’s lawyer has filed a transfer application in the case which will be heard on 1st of October.
