Koothuparambu Firing Survivor and Martyr Pushpan Passes Away

Kozhikode: Pushpan, who was known as the living martyr of Koothuparambu firing, passed away. He died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode due to health problems.

He was bedridden for the past 30 years after being injured in the Koothuparam firing. He died on Saturday afternoon. In 1994, Pushpan was shot during a protest against Swashraya College. On November 25, 1994, the police opened fire on the DYFI workers who came to stop minister MV Raghavan at Koothuparm near Thalassery. The minister was at the inauguration of the evening branch of Urban Cooperative Bank in Koothuparam.

DYFI workers KK Rajeevan, Madhu, Shibulal, Babu and Roshan were killed in the firing. About six workers, including Pushpan, were seriously injured.

Pushpan, who was shot in Koothuparam, never got up again. Pushpan was a living martyr for CPM ranks. The workers were enthusiastic and passionate. On rare occasions, Pushpan appeared enthusiastically for activists at election events and party platforms.
