Kozhikode: The mortal remains of M.T. Vasudevan Nair, the unparalleled genius of Malayalam literature, have been brought to his residence, Sithara, located on Kottaram Road, Nadakkavu. The body will be kept at his residence for public homage until this evening. The funeral will take place at 5 PM at the Mavoor Road Crematorium. M.T. had previously given clear instructions to his family regarding his posthumous arrangements, and all decisions have been made accordingly.
M.T. breathed his last at 10 PM last night while undergoing treatment at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode. He was admitted to the hospital on December 15 due to a respiratory ailment. During his treatment, he suffered a heart attack. Over the past four days, his health showed no significant improvement. He was able to breathe without mechanical support. However, as kidney and cardiac functions declined, he passed away at 10 PM.
The state has declared two days of mourning to honor M.T.’s passing. All official events have been postponed. Over seven decades, M.T.’s literary works bridged the gap between common readers and intellectuals alike, creating a lasting legacy. His contributions earned him India’s highest literary honor, the Jnanpith Award, and the prestigious Padma Bhushan. He also served in distinguished roles such as Editor of Mathrubhumi publications, President of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Fellow of the Central Sahitya Akademi, and Chairman of the Thunchan Memorial Trust.
