Malayalam superstar Mammootty turns 70

Kerala’s most popular icon, superstar Mammootty turns 70 today, on September 7. The megastar has been receiving immense love and best wishes from his fans and friends from the industry. Also fans across the state and outside are pouring their wishes by portraying the golden star in different art forms.

Mammootty, more popularly known as Mammukka completed 50 years in the industry last month. He has set a new benchmark in cinema with his performances and choice of films. In a career spanning over four decades, he has featured in almost 400 films. He has also been a part of many Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English films. The lawyer turned actor was born on September 7, 1951, in the Kottayam district of Kerala. Mammootty made is acting debut in 1971 with small character in Anubhavangal Paalichakal. However, this versatile actor rose to fame with his 1980 releases Mela and Vilkkanundu Swapnangal. Then, there was no looking back for this Mollywood megastar. Mammootty tasted his first commercial success with the film ‘New Delhi’ in 1987.The “living legend” has won three National Film Awards for Best Actor, seven Kerala State Film Awards and 13 Filmfare Awards South. Five decades, and over 400 films, three National awards, one Padma Shri and two honorary doctorate degrees later, Mammootty is still busy churning out an average of five to seven films a year. In 1998, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri for his contributions to the art.
