Kochi: Amid growing concerns over the slow progress of Kochi Metro’s second phase, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has stepped up construction activities. The pace picked up significantly following the allocation of central and state government funds. So far, six girders have been completed. Excavation works have begun in the Airport–Seaport and CSEZ station areas where piling is already done. According to KMRL, the stretch from Palarivattom to Kakkanad is witnessing rapid construction, with 307 piles already installed. KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera stated that construction is progressing in such a way that the project can be completed by June next year.
The superstructure components including pier caps are being manufactured at the 8.85-hectare casting yard in Kalamassery. The yard has two separate divisions — the first focuses on the construction of U-girders, while the second handles the casting of I-girders, pier caps, parapets, T-girders, and L-girders. So far, four pier caps and four U-girders have been cast at the Kalamassery yard.
Meanwhile, KMRL has already initiated the groundwork for the third phase of the metro, which will extend the line to Angamaly. This move is aimed at benefiting passengers using the Nedumbassery International Airport. Currently, the Kochi Metro operates up to Aluva, and the proposed extension to Angamaly is expected to span 18 kilometers. KMRL’s initial plan also includes a possible underground metro route to directly connect to the airport.
