Police preparing to seize the assets of the accused in the MDMA case

The police are preparing to seize the assets of the accused in the MDMA case involving the arrest of Kozhikode natives with approximately 1.25 kg of MDMA in Muthanga. Following the incident, the Wayanad police submitted a report to the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators Act (SAFEMA) authority in Chennai, which approved the seizure of the car belonging to the first accused, Shamnad (44), from Kaithappoyil Puthuppadi. The car has since been seized.

A report has also been submitted to SAFEMA requesting the seizure of the car and bike owned by the second accused, A.S. Ashkar (28), from Aliparambil House, Eengapuzha, Kozhikode. The hearing on this matter is scheduled for April 1.

On August 6, 2024, Shamnad and Ashkar were arrested with 1.198 kg of MDMA by a joint operation of the District Anti-Narcotics Squad and the Bathery police. The accused had purchased the MDMA from Bengaluru and attempted to smuggle it by concealing it inside a truck’s driver cabin.

According to the law, if the assets are found to be acquired through illegal means, the authorities can seize the properties of drug trafficking gang members and their associates.
