Restrictions will be lifted from tomorrow as the runway renovation at Thiruvananthapuram Airport is complete.

Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has set a new record by completing the runway re-carpeting in 75 days. The 3.4 km long and 60 meter wide runway was renovated in such a short time. This is a record among brownfield runways in South India.

All flights will return to their regular schedule from March 30, 2025. The re-carpeting work began on January 14, 2025. The challenge of re-carpeting the runway without significantly affecting aircraft operations was overcome by utilizing only 9 hours per day. During this period, the runway handled an average of 80 flights per day in the remaining 15 hours. Over nine lakh passengers travelled through Thiruvananthapuram Airport during this period.

Approximately 50,000 metric tons of asphalt, equivalent to 120 lane kilometers of road, have been laid for runway re-carpeting. 150,000 meters of duct pipe network have been laid. Upgradation of 5.5 lakh square meters of graded strip area has been completed. A total area of 2.40 lakh square meters has been re-carpeted. The project was completed using 500 employees and workers and over 200 state-of-the-art equipment. The runway at the airport was last re-carpeted in 2015. With the lifting of restrictions, flight services at the airport will now resume during the day.
