Police are still unable to trace Sukant Suresh, the accused in the case related to the suicide of an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer in Thiruvananthapuram. A raid was conducted yesterday at Sukant’s house, who is currently absconding, during which police recovered a hard disk and bank passbooks. The house was locked and had to be broken open for the search. The raid was jointly conducted by the Pettah and Changaramkulam police.
Sukant Suresh, a colleague of the deceased IB officer, has been charged with rape and other offenses following evidence of sexual abuse. The officer was found dead on March 24, hit by a train after leaving duty at the Thiruvananthapuram airport. According to the family, a strained relationship with Sukant, a native of Malappuram, drove their daughter to suicide. However, police are yet to determine the exact reason behind the fallout in their relationship.
Police said Sukant and his family went into hiding after the officer’s death, and Sukant’s phone was switched off. A lookout notice has been issued against him, following which Sukant filed an anticipatory bail plea in the High Court. He is currently serving as an IB officer in Kochi.
Police also revealed that Sukant had forged documents to prove that he was married to the woman, in order to get her to undergo an abortion. Fake invitation letters and documents were found in the officer’s bag. The abortion reportedly took place at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram in July.
After the abortion, Sukant backed out of the relationship. Just days before her death, Sukant had sent a message to the woman’s mother stating that he was no longer willing to marry her. Police believe the emotional distress caused by this led the woman to take her own life.
