Summer rains intensifying: Yellow Alert Issued in 3 Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The state is likely to experience isolated heavy rains today. A yellow alert has been issued in three districts—Ernakulam, Palakkad, and Wayanad—by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the IMD, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds with speeds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h are expected in Kerala today.

Safety Guidelines:

  • At the first sign of lightning, move to a safe building immediately. Staying in open spaces increases the risk of lightning strikes.

  • During strong winds and thunderstorms, keep doors and windows closed. Avoid standing near windows and doors. Remain indoors and minimize contact with walls and floors.

  • Disconnect electrical appliances and avoid contact with them during lightning strikes.

  • Avoid using landline telephones during lightning. Mobile phone usage is safe.

  • If the sky appears cloudy, avoid playing outdoors, especially on terraces or open fields.

  • Do not stand under trees or park vehicles under them during lightning.

  • If inside a vehicle during a thunderstorm, stay inside with windows closed. Avoid traveling on bicycles, motorcycles, or tractors during lightning and seek shelter in a safe building.

  • Avoid going to terraces or courtyards to collect clothes during a thunderstorm.

  • Secure objects that may be blown away by strong winds.

  • Avoid bathing during thunderstorms and refrain from collecting water from taps, as lightning can travel through plumbing.

  • Do not enter water bodies like lakes or rivers for fishing or bathing during thunderstorms. Fishermen should return to shore as soon as dark clouds appear. Avoid standing on the boat deck and refrain from casting fishing nets or using fishing rods.

  • Refrain from flying kites during thunderstorms.

  • Avoid staying on terraces, high places, or tree branches during lightning.

  • Do not tie domestic animals in open spaces during thunderstorms. Avoid untying them or relocating them in such conditions, as it may increase your risk of being struck by lightning.

  • If caught in an open area with no shelter, keep your feet together, tuck your head between your knees, and curl up into a ball-like position.

  • Buildings can be protected from lightning by installing lightning conductors. Surge protectors can be used for electrical appliances.

  • Lightning strikes can cause burns, loss of vision or hearing, and even cardiac arrest. Remember, a person struck by lightning does not carry an electric charge. Therefore, do not hesitate to provide first aid. The first 30 seconds after a lightning strike are critical for survival. Seek immediate medical attention for the affected person.
