Tanur custodial death case; CBI team arrests police officials

Malappuram: CBI arrests policemen involved in Malappuram Tanur custodial death. The CBI team reached the house and arrested the accused early this morning. The first accused is Senior CPO Jinesh, the second accused is CPO Albin Augustine, the third accused is CPO Abhimanyu and the fourth accused is CPO ViPin.

Tamir Geoffrey was killed on August 1, 2023, while in police custody at Mamburum Maliekal house. Tamir Geoffrey died in the early hours of August 1st. After the autopsy report revealed that the death was due to brutal beating, there was widespread protest against the police. It was alleged that the death was due to beating by the officers of Dansaf group.

The youth, including Tamir Geoffrey, were taken into custody by the Dansaf gang from a rented room in Chelari. The autopsy report indicates that Tamir Geoffrey was brutally beaten. 21 injuries were found on the body. According to the report, the cause of death was overdose of drugs which affected the functioning of the heart.

The family of Tamir Geoffrey, had earlier filed a complaint with the Chief Minister demanding that the accused be charged with murder in the custodial death. The family also said in the complaint that the accused were not arrested. The state government then decided to hand over the case to the CBI.
