Idukki: Tourists beaten up by staff at Munnar Echo Point. Hydel tourism contract staff beat up the tourists who came from Kollam. Kayayankali demanded more money despite having bought tickets for boating after questioning. A group of 17 women and children reached Munnar from Kollam yesterday morning. They reached Echo Point for boating in the afternoon.
The contract employees of Hydel Tourism asked to pay Rs 10 per person to get a pass to enter here. The argument that it was not enough for those who did not board the boat to get a pass led to the irritation. The complaint is that the contract employee and the guides have engaged in indecent acts. Then Najima, an elderly woman who was in the group, was pushed down and kicked and injured. Six people, including a child, were injured.
The tourists who were detained by the trespassers were released by the Munnar police. Najma with spinal injury, Ajmi with broken left arm bone, Dr. Afzal, Ansaf, Ansaf’s wife Shehana and Ansil are undergoing treatment at Munnar Tata Hospital. Hydel Tourism employees also sought treatment on the complaint of injuries. Munnar police took the statements of both parties and registered a case. Many complaints have been raised against the unnecessary collection of money by Hydel Tourism employees, but no significant action has been taken.
