Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that ₹712 crore has been received so far in the relief fund related to the Wayanad disaster. Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, he mentioned that since the disaster has been declared a “severe calamity” by the central government, more aid is expected. He also clarified that ₹2,221 crore has been requested from the Centre.
The Chief Minister announced that land will be purchased to build townships in Wayanad. Houses will be constructed in a way that allows for an additional floor to be built in the future. For those who wish to live outside the government-constructed townships, ₹15 lakh will be provided. Until rehabilitation is complete, the government will cover the rent for houses, and funds for this have been allocated. While admitting delays in central aid, he expressed optimism that the funds would eventually be received.
However, Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan criticized the government, claiming the rehabilitation process remains uncertain. He alleged that even six months after the disaster, those injured have not received treatment assistance and are paying for medical care out of their own pockets, including those with serious injuries. He also criticized the estimated ₹30 lakh per house as being too high, which he said has led many sponsors to withdraw their support.
In response, the Chief Minister clarified that ₹30 lakh per house is only a preliminary estimate. He explained that constructing houses together would reduce costs, potentially bringing the figure down to ₹20 lakh per house. He also noted that letters had been sent to all MPs across the country requesting ₹1 crore each as assistance.
