1.42 lakh meters are non-functional;KSEB

Thiruvananthapuram: Out of the total 1.35 crore meters in houses and institutions in Kerala, 1,42,072 meters are non-functional. Of these, 22,814 were damaged more than a year ago. KSEB informed this in response to a RTI query.

Of the damaged, 21,635 meters belong to institutions. KSEB informed this in response to a RTI query. The explanation given by KSEB is that lack of availability of electricity meters is the obstacle to change them.

Due to political opposition, Kerala withdrew from the Centre’s smart meter project, but said it would build a smart meter on its own, but it may not happen soon. As per the plan initially given by Kerala, when the center sanctioned 1.50 lakh smart meters, the plan fell behind.

11 crore smart meters given by the Center to various states have been installed. By 2025, states that do not participate in the Akam scheme will not get central grants in the power sector.
