The medical board has confirmed that Venjaramoodu multiple murder case accused Afan has no mental health issues and carried out the killings with full awareness. The board also stated that he will be discharged from the hospital within two days once his physical condition stabilizes. Currently, Afan is being held in a cell at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. The Venjaramoodu police will file a custody application today.
Afan’s arrest was earlier recorded by the Pangode police in connection with the murder of his grandmother, Salma Beevi. Once discharged, he will be transferred to jail, and two more cases will be filed against him.
According to Afan, financial burdens drove him to commit the murders and attempt suicide. He repeatedly told the police that he couldn’t bear to leave his younger brother and mother alone to suffer. He also mentioned that he didn’t want to abandon his girlfriend. He claimed that his uncle, uncle’s wife, and grandmother did not understand or help with his struggles, leading him to believe they should not live either.
It has been confirmed that Afan consumed alcohol on the day of the incident. However, authorities are still awaiting the results of blood tests to determine if he had used drugs.
Afan had also planned to murder three more close relatives. “I had planned to kill my mother’s relatives—both the mother and daughter staying in Thattathumala—and my uncle in Venjaramoodu. But after attacking my younger brother, I lost my courage and strength. Otherwise, I would have killed them too,” Afan reportedly confessed to a psychiatrist at the Medical College Hospital. The psychiatrist then informed the police about his statement.
